Elite Model Look 2013 casting days

Een carrière als een wereldberoemd topmodel, die wekelijks - nee, misschien zelfs dagelijks - heen-en-weer reist tussen fashion capitals als Parijs, Milaan en New York. Het is iets waar de meeste meiden wel van dromen, maar helaas is het slechts voor enkelen weggelegd. Toch mag je jezelf nooit onderschatten. Hoezo zou jij met je ranke figuurtje, lange benen en mooie jukbeenderen geen kans maken op het leven van een topmodel? De drempel mag dan wel wat hoger zijn om zomaar bij een modellenbureau aan te kloppen (al is er niets mis met een gezonde portie zelfvertrouwen, kijk maar naar Doutzen Kroes die zelf foto's instuurde naar een modellenbureau). Gelukkig is er ook een andere manier: de jaarlijkse Elite Model Look!

ENGLISH: A carreer as a famous top model, that weekly - no, maybe even daily - travels back-and-forth between fashion capitals like Paris, Milan and New York. It's something a lot of girls dream of, but unfortunately the dream only comes true for the lucky few. However, you should never underestimate yourself. Why wouldn't you have a chance with your skinny posture, killer legs and gorgeous cheekbones? It might be a bit scary to just knock the door at a big model agency, even though there's nothing wrong with a healthy portion of confidence. Think of Doutzen Kroes, who sent pictures to a model agency herself before she was famous. Luckily there's also another way: the yearly Elite Model Look!

Er vinden binnenkort castingdagen plaats in verschillende steden in Nederland. Afgelopen zondag was het de beurt aan Muiden, maar binnenkort komt de Elite Model Look ook naar Groningen en Beek (het noorden en het zuiden van het land). Grijp je kans dus, zou ik zeggen! Er zijn slechts twee voorwaarden om deel te nemen: je bent tussen de 14 en 22 jaar oud en bent minimaal 1.72 m lang. Helaas voldoe ik niet aan die voorwaarden, maar ben jij wel een van die lucky bastards? GO FOR IT!

PS. Misschien wel leuk om te weten welke inmiddels wereldberoemde modellen ooit ook deelnamen aan de Elite Model Look: Alessandra Ambrosio, Cindy Crawford, Diane Kruger, Gisele Bündchen, Lara Stone en Yfke Sturm. Stuk voor stuk namen waar je ongetwijfeld al van gehoord hebt. Zij bewijzen het: everything is possible!

PPS. Ben jij van plan om naar de castingdagen in Beek te gaan? Hou dan je ogen goed open, want ik loop er zondag 8 september ook rond! Niet om deel te nemen, maar om de wedstrijd van achter de schermen te volgen. Ben je dus van plan te gaan? Laat het me zeker van tevoren even weten, misschien kan ik je dan wel eventjes ontmoeten!

Last Sunday it was Muiden's turn, but soon the Elite Model Look will come to Groningen and Beek (the north and the south of the Netherlands). I'd say: take your shot! New York in pictures #part1

Zoals jullie weten ben ik inmiddels alweer zo'n twee weken geleden vanuit Curaçao op vakantie geweest naar Amerika. Naar Boston en New York om precies te zijn. Ik hou sowieso al van foto's maken én m'n zusje had net een nieuwe camera, dus we hebben ontzettend veel foto's gemaakt. Vandaag een selectie van mijn favoriete kiekjes: New York in pictures #part1! 

ENGLISH: It has been two weeks already since I went on a trip from Curaçao to the United States. I went to Boston and New York, as you could read on my blog earlier. I like taking pictures anyway, but my sister just bought a new camera so we took infinitely many pictures. Today I'll give you a selection of my favorite snaps: New York in pictures #part1!

Too cool for school

Nagellak: tot voor kort was het niet veel meer dan een gekleurd goedje wat je op je vinger- en teennagels kon aanbrengen om ze een beetje op te leuken. De laatste tijd pakken cosmeticabedrijven het een stuk innovatiever aan. Zo kwam Ciaté onlangs met de inmiddels befaamde chalkboard manicure. Say what?

ENGLISH: Nail polish: until recently it was nothing but a colored liquid that you can apply on your finger and toe nails to brighten things up a little. But lately cosmetic brands try to be more and more innovate. A good example is Ciaté, a brand that recently came up with their famous chalkboard manicure. Say what?

"Hate the sound of nails on a chalkboard? Why not try chalkboard on your nails? Release your inner child and decide what your nails will say about you today, literally." De Ciaté Chalkboard Manicure start met een matte, zwarte "schoolbord" base coat. Van zodra deze droog is kun je beginnen te experimenteren met de krijtpennen. Is het toch niet helemaal wat je leuk vindt? Even afspoelen met water en klaar is kees! En als je een design gevonden hebt wat je leuk vindt kun je de top coat aanbrengen zodat het niet vervaagt doorheen de dag. Super gaaf! Iets voor jou?

Now that's NICE

Zoals jullie inmiddels al wel weten ben ik dol op petten. Baseballpetten welteverstaan. Flat caps zijn iets minder mijn ding. Bij jongens staan ze vaak nog wel oké, maar bij meisjes? Da's een ander verhaal. Natuurlijk zijn er altijd figuren die er wel mee weg komen. Denk maar aan Cara Delevigne. Hoewel ik dus niet zo'n flat cap fanaat ben, kon ik het niet laten om onderstaande exemplaren met jullie te delen.

ENGLISH: When I say I love caps I'm talking about baseball caps. Flat caps are not really my cup of tea. Most of the time they look okay on boys, but girls? That's a different story. Of course there are always these people out there that look good in everything. Think of Cara Delevigne. Even though I'm not such a big flat cap fanatic, I couldn't resist showing you the ones underneath.

Want geef toe: deze zijn gewoon té vet, of niet soms? Ze laten me m'n hele normen en waarden over flatcaps over boord gooien, want deze wil ik! Ze zijn het resultaat van een samenwerking van New Era en Ecap City. Blijkbaar ben ik niet de enige bij wie ze in de smaak vallen: het merendeel van de petten op de site zijn sold out. Dat betekent dat je lekker exclusief bent mocht je wel de kans hebben er eentje in de wacht te slepen. 

P.S. Overigens wil ik nog even vermelden dat bij deze petten mijn beeld over flat caps andersom geldt. Een meisje met zo'n NICE cap? Supervet. Een jongen? Nah. Beetje te hipster.

ENGLISH: Because - just admit it - these are wicked cool, aren't they? They make me forget my usual opinion about flat caps. I want these! They are the end result of a collaboration between New Era and Ecap City. Apperently I'm not the only one who thinks they hit the spot: most of the caps on the website are already sold out. That means that you are pretty exclusive if you are one of the lucky bastards who could get her hands on one.

P.S. I wanna add that my thoughts about flat caps on males and females are exactly the other way around when we talk about the NICE caps. A girl with such a cap? Nice. (Haha. Ok.) A boy? Nah. A bit too hipster.

Curaçao on my mind

Het zat er na een maand hier te zijn onderhand aan te komen: het einde van mijn verblijf hier op Curaçao. Heb een fantastische tijd achter de rug met mijn ouders en zusje (die deze zomer naar het eiland verhuisd zijn), maar nu is het weer tijd voor Nederland: Maastricht calling! 

ENGLISH: The inevitable was coming closer and closer: the end of my stay on sunny island Curaçao. I've had the time of my life chilling with my parents and little sister (who moved to the island this summer), but now it's time to return to the Netherlands again: Maastricht calling!

Gelukkig zijn er ook in ons inmiddels-niet-meer-zo-koude-kikkerlandje heel wat spannende dingen te beleven. Sterker nog: wanneer ik weer in Maastricht aankom moet ik me twee uur later alweer melden. Ik ben namelijk samen met een vriendin "mama" tijdens de Inkom, de introductieweek - of moet ik zeggen: feestweek? - voor alle nieuwe studenten in Maastricht. Wel makkelijk, kan ik lekker doorleven op mijn jetlag. 12 uur 's nachts op Curaçao is namelijk 6 uur 's nachts in Nederland.... aaah perfect. BRING IT ON.

ENGLISH: Luckily there's a lot of exciting stuff coming up over there as well. Once I arrive in Maastricht, I have to be somewhere two hours later already. I will be a "mama" during the Inkom, the introduction week - or should I say: party week? - for all the new students in Maastricht. Pretty convenient since I can hold on to my jetlag. Midnight in Curaçao is 6 a.m. in the Netherlands... aaah perfect. BRING IT ON.

Glow-in-the-dark à la Alexander Wang

Glow-in-the-dark. Het is iets waar ik van kinds af aan altijd al door gefascineerd werd. Mijn eerste contact met glow-in-the-dark was waarschijnlijk toen ik op de lagere school voor het eerst bij een vriendinnetje mocht blijven slapen. Overdag was haar kamer mooi, maar ik was niet jaloers. M'n eigen blauw-met-gele stekkie - no joke - was minstens zo goed. Tot het donker werd... Plotseling lichtten de honderden sterren op het plafond van haar kamer op. Niet zo bevorderlijk voor de nachtrust, maar oh oh: wat was dat mooi! Alexander Wang haalde met zijn glow-in-the-dark collectie deze zomer het kind in elk van ons weer naar boven...

ENGLISH: Glow-in-the-dark. It's something that has been fascinating me ever since I was a child. My first contact with glow-in-the-dark was probably on my first sleepover at a friend's place in primary school. During the day her room looked really nice, but I was not jealous. My own blue-and-yellow hideaway - no joke - looked just as nice. Until it got dark... Suddenly hundreds of stars on the ceiling of her room lit up. Not so conducive for the night sleep, but dear god: that was marvelous! Alexander Wang released the child in everyone of us this summer with his glow-in-the-dark collection...

Eigenlijk verliep de show zoals elke standaard fashion show. De modellen schrijnden over de catwalk in de mooiste designerstukken waar geen enkele fashionista aan kan weerstaan. (Tenzij je je creditcard in een blok ijs in de vriezer ingevroren hebt natuurlijk. Dan lukt het je wellicht wel.) Toen het einde van de show naderde dimden plots alle lichten en lichtten de jurkjes van de modellen allemaal op. Een mooi staaltje creativiteit! 

Ik ben echt helemaal verliefd op dit geniaal idee van Mr. Wang. Een simpel wit jurkje wordt in een wip omgetoverd van daily outfit naar een vamp outfit om het nachtleven mee te veroveren. Zie je je al staan in een bomvolle discotheek met je glow-in-the-dark dress? Als je dan nog niet de aandacht trekt van al het moois in de club weet ik het ook niet meer... Zou jij graag zo'n glow-in-the-dark jurkje willen hebben? Of pak je het graag liever iets subtieler aan met een glow-in-the-dark tasje?

ENGLISH: The show went like every other fashion show. The models walked the runway in the most gorgeous designer pieces that no fashionista in the world could resist. (Unless you freezed your credit card in a block of ice in your freezer of course. Then it might be possible.) As the end of the show came closer, the lights suddenly dimmed and all the dresses of the models suddenly lit up. A nice piece of creativity!

I love this genius idea of Mr. Wang. A simple white dress can suddenly turn into a gorgeous vamp outfit that will get you through the night. Do you see yourself standing in a packed club with your glow-in-the-dark dress already? If you don't have the attention of all beauty in the club then... then I don't know what you should do. Would you like to have such a glow-in-the-dark dress? Or do you like things a bit more subtle and would you be better off with a glow-in-the-dark bag?

Downtown from behind: NY streetstyle

Op het moment dat jullie dit lezen ben struin ik door de straten van New York, "concrete jungle where dreams are made of..." Het leek me dan ook wel leuk om een NY related artikel online te posten. Ik popel namelijk al een hele tijd om jullie te vertellen over het onderwerp van vandaag, maar heb het speciaal bewaard tot ik in the city was: Downtown from behind, een fotografieblog die mensen al fietsend door de straten van New York vanuit achteraanzicht portretteert...

ENGLISH: At the moment you read this I'm strolling through the streets of New York, "concrete jungle where dreams are made of..." I thought it would be fun to make a NY related post. I've been craving to tell you about todays subject, but I didn't post it yet on purpose: Downtown from behind, a photography blog that portrays people on their bikes throught the streets of New York in back view...

In één woord: fantastisch! Het wordt natuurlijk steeds moeilijker om je als fotograaf te onderscheiden van de massa. Door met iets creatiefs als dit op de proppen te komen trek je meteen aandacht van geïnteresseerden van over de hele wereld! Het voornaamste idee is eigenlijk om de downtown straten van New York in kaart te brengen, in combinatie met de individuen op de foto's zelf. Stuk voor stuk inspirerende figuren die hun dagelijkse leventje in New York doorbrengen. Bij elke foto hoort dus een verhaal, enorm interessant! Wie weet kan ik bepaalde straten zelfs herkennen hier in New York... challenge accepted!

ENGLISH: In one word: amazing! Nowadays, it's getting harder for photographers to stand out from the crowd. By coming up with something creative like this, you immediately catch the attention of interested people from all over the world. The main idea is actually to show the different downtown streets of New York, combined with the subjects on the pictures. They are all very inspiring people that call New York their hometown, so every picture has a story. Maybe I can even recognize some streets here in New York... challenge accepted!

When your steps make that much noise

Blake Lively is zonder twijfel een van de mooiste vrouwen ter wereld. Ryan Reynolds mag zich nogal gelukkig prijzen met zo'n chica aan zijn zijde. Vroeger dacht ik altijd dat Blake Lively helemaal perfect was, maar blijkbaar heeft ze ook het een en het ander aan zichzelf laten veranderen. (Benieuwd? Klik hier!) Ook al is ze dus niet 100% real, ze is en blijft een stunning lady! 

ENGLISH: Blake Lively is one of the most gorgeous women alive, no doubt 'bout it. Ryan Reynolds must be really lucky with such a chica by his side. I used to think that Blake Lively was totally perfect, but apparently she's not: she did some surgery. (Curious? Click here!) But even though she's not 100% real, she's still a stunning lady!

Deze foto's zijn genomen tijdens een fotoshoot voor het Amerikaanse Lucky magazine. Ze ziet er zo ontzettend sexy uit in deze outfit! Eén item trok meteen mijn aandacht: die laarzen. OMG. Lang, zwart en nauwsluitend met open teen. Dit is de perfectie! Thigh-high boots kunnen soms ordinair overkomen, maar bij deze is dat absoluut niet het geval. Zelfs niet in combinatie met een LBD! Ik ben er nog niet achter van welk merk deze laarzen zijn, maar ik blijf zoeken totdat ik het weet. Wat vinden jullie van haar laarzen?

ENGLISH: These pictures were taken in a photoshoot for the American magazine Lucky. She looks so incredibly hot in this outfit! One item immediately caught my eye: the boots. OMG. Tall, black and tight-fitting with peeptoe. This is perfection! Thigh-high boots can look cheap sometimes, but for these boots that's definitely not the case. Even not when combined with an LBD! I didn't find out yet where she got these, but I'll keep looking until I find out. What do you think of her boots?

I'm going to One Republic! In NYC!

Ik ga meteen met de deur in huis vallen: IK GA NAAR ONE REPUBLIC! Inderdaad, je hebt het goed gehoord! Net wanneer ik in New York ben komt One Republic optreden. Toen ik daar achter kwam heb ik als de wiedeweerga tickets besteld. Het optreden is open lucht - als ik me niet vergis - op een van de pieren aan de Hudson River. Een hele coole ervaring dus! Om jullie geheugen wat op te frissen heb ik hieronder mijn favoriete tracks van One Republic even op een rijtje gezet. (Je kent ze gegarandeerd allemaal!)

ENGLISH: Let me get straight to the point: I'M GOING TO ONE REPUBLIC! Yes, you heard it! When I'll be in New York One Republic is performing in the city. As soon as I found out, I immediately ordered the tickets. It's an open air performance on one of the piers at the Hudson River. A unique experience! I made a list of my favorite One Republic tracks to refresh your minds. (I bet you know them all!)

Off to New York City

Heb de afgelopen dagen in Boston doorgebracht! Vertel jullie hierover later meer, maar nu staat er eerst nog een andere bestemming op het programma: NYC... HERE I COME!

ENGLISH: I spent the last couple of days in Boston. I'll tell you more about this later, but now I gotta run for my next stop: NYC.... HERE I COME!

Feeling blue? Try this!

Zelf experimenteer ik eerlijk gezegd niet zo vaak met make-up. Mijn standaard routine bestaat uit niet veel meer dan een likje mascara, met heel af en toe wat concealer en zwarte eyeliner onder mijn ogen. Hoewel beauty artiesten bij modeshows dit af en toe ook voldoende vinden - denk maar aan de nude look die een tijdje helemaal booming was - proberen ze regelmatig met nieuwe concepten op de proppen te komen. Zo ook laatst bij Michael Kors, waar men een leuke twist gaf aan het standaard lijntje boven de ogen!

ENGLISH: To be honest: I hardly ever experiment with make-up. My daily routine consists of nothing more than a bit of mascara, with sometimes some concealer and black eyeliner under my eyes. Even though beauty artists at fashion shows often find this sufficient - remember the popularity of the nude look? - they often try to come up with new ideas. That's what they did at Michael Kors: they gave a fun twist to the standard black eyeliner!

Ik vind het er verrassend genoeg nog leuk uitzien ook! Niet echt iets voor elke dag, maar als je eens een dagje wat meer wilt uitpakken met je make-up voor een speciaal feestje of een dagje bij een hippe beachclub kan het wel. 

PS. Het lijntje hoeft overigens niet per definitie blauw te zijn (al staat dat wel het mooist bij blauwe ogen). Je kunt ook kiezen voor een ander fel kleurtje of een lichte pasteltint. Eigenlijk kan alles, zolang je maar niet voor zwart- of bruintinten gaat. Dat kan er namelijk een beetje eng uit gaan zien, net alsof je dubbele wenkbrauwen hebt. Brrr!

ENGLISH: I didn't expect this, but I must say it actually looks good! Not really something to wear every day, but if you wanna show off with your make-up for a fancy party or a day at a trendy beachclub: why not?

PS. The line does not have to be blue (even though it looks the best on blue-eyed girls). You can also go for another bright color or light pastel shade. Actually everything is possible, unless you don't go for black and brown shades. That looks a bit creepy, like you have four eyebrows or something. Brrr!
