Zoals jullie weten ben ik in augustus naar Boston geweest. Boston staat bekend om haar goede universiteiten, die stuk voor stuk ontzettend hoog op de wereldwijde rankings staan (denk aan Harvard of MIT), maar wist je ook dat Converse oorspronkelijk uit Boston komt? Ik niet, totdat ik het in m'n Lonely Planet las. Blijkbaar is de Converse store in Boston vanwege zijn oorsprong dan ook een van de must sees die je niet mag missen wanneer je in deze bruisende Amerikaanse stad komt...

Boston is known for its great universities, which are almost all highly ranked in the worldwide university rankings (think of Harvard or MIT), but did you know that Converse is originally founded in Boston? I didn't, until I read about it in my Lonely Planet. Apparently the Converse store in Boston is one of the must sees you cannot miss when you visit this vibrant American city...
Op het eerste zicht vond ik 'm wel redelijk te vergelijken met andere Converse stores die ik al eerder bezocht heb, zoals die op Curaçao, tot ik plots een enorme machine zag staan in een hoek van de winkel. Nieuwsgierig ging ik op nader onderzoek uit en ontdekte dat het de "Get your Converse stuff inked" stand was. Wat houdt het in? Elk item wat je in de Converse store koopt kun je hier laten bedrukken met een design of opdruk naar keuze: van All Stars tot T-shirts en laptophoezen. Zo ontzettend gaaf!
Helaas ben ik niet gezegend met uitstekende design skills, maar ook daar was aan gedacht. Er was namelijk een professionele designer aanwezig die al het werk voor je deed. Uiteindelijk ging mijn zusje (te zien op een van bovenstaande foto's met het design team, overenthousiast) naar huis met een paar gecustomizede chucks met haar naam erop. Ik besloot na lang twijfelen het toch simpel te houden en koos voor een paar bordeaux rode All Stars.
Toch blijf ik het initiatief heel erg vet vinden. Als je er over nadenkt heeft vrijwel elke jongen of meisje wel een paar All Stars in z'n kast staan. Erg origineel is het dus niet, maar door ze te customizen maak je er in één klap een ware eyecatcher van. Heb jij al eens zo'n Converse store bezocht? Zou jij je Converses wel eens willen pimpen?
ENGLISH: At first sight I thought the store was quite comparable to other Converse stores I've visited earlier, like the one on Curaçao, until I checked out the second floor and saw a huge machine in the corner of the store. I was really curious and discovered it was the "Get your Converse stuff inked" stand. What does it mean? Every item you buy in the Converse store, you can get it printed with a design or overprint that you like: from All Stars to T-shirts and laptop cases. So cool!
Unfortunately I'm not blessed with some fabulous designer skills, but they even thought about that. There was a professional designer who did all the work for you. Eventually my sister (you can see her on one of the pics above, overly enthusiastic) went home with a pair of customized chucks with her name on it. After much doubt I decided to keep it simple and bought a pair of bordeaux red All Stars.
Still I think the initiative is super cool. If you think about it you know that almost every guy or girl has a pair of All Stars in his/her closet.
