Zoals jullie weten ben ik afgelopen zomer in New York geweest. Ik vind het een prachtige stad. Niet alleen wanneer ik door de straten struin en geniet van alle drukte rondom me, maar ook als ik naar de torenhoge skyscrapers staar. Of wat dacht je van het uitzicht vanuit het Empire State Building, van waaruit je bij helder weer eindeloos over de hele stad kunt turen. Je vangt daar al een glimp op van een aantal daken van de lagere wolkenkrabbers. Destijds vond ik deze niet buitengewoon interessant, maar wist je dat er ook ontzettend gave rooftops bestaan? Kijk zelf maar!
ENGLISH: As you all know I visited New York last summer. I think it's such a beautiful city. Not only when I walk down the streets and enjoy the fuss around me, but also when I look up at the towering skyscrapers. Or what did you think of the view from the Empire State Building, from which you can stare endlessly over the city whenever the sky is clear. You can already catch a glimpse of some rooftops of lower buildings from there. Back then I didn't find them extremely interesting,but did you also know that there exist some pretty cool rooftops? Have a look yourself!
Bovenstaande foto's komen allemaal uit het boek "Up on the Roof: New York’s Hidden Skyline Spaces", een boek van Amerikaanse fotograaf Alex MacLean. In films zie je wel vaker mensen chillen op het dak, maar meestal valt er dan niet heel veel te zien. (Naast een adembenemend mooi uitzicht bedoel ik dan.) Zonde, want met die verloren ruimte kun je zoveel meer doen. Dat bewijzen bovenstaande foto's wel: van zwembaden en tennisvelden tot cafés en groentetuintjes.

Als ik nog eens in New York ben ga ik er zeker op letten en zoveel mogelijk adresjes uit het boek een bezoekje brengen. Ben jij al eens op een rooftop geweest?
ENGLISH: All these pictures are from the book "Up on the Roof: New York's Hidden Skyline Spaces", a book from American photographer Alex MacLean. In movies you usually see people chilling on the roof, but most of the time there's not that much to see. (Apart from the breathtaking view of course.) Too bad, because you could do so much more with all that lost space. These pictures prove it: from swimming pools and tennis courts to bars and small gardens.
